A special exhibition at The Fan Museum of a wonderful selection of fans belonging to the Dutch royal family. Each fan is a very personal object, having been made, gifted, used and passed down from mother to daughter, for Queens Emma, Wilhelmina, Juliana, Beatrix and Princess Maxima. The fans in this royal collection comprise a variety of styles, but each reflects the taste of the lady who owned and enjoyed it. Indeed, two of the fans were painted by Queen Wilhelmina herself a highly proficient artist - as gifts to her mother, Queen Emma. Price £10 P&P £2.75 |

In this fascinating book, daily life and times at the court of the 'Sun King', including well-known figures such as Madames de Montespan and Maintenon, as well as other royal and court figures, visiting dignitaries and national events, are discussed in considerable detail. Many scenes are set in the grounds of Versailles and these are identified by the author, whose impeccable research provides the gossip 'straight from the horse's mouth'. All this is presented in the vehicle of the folding fan, which rose to prominence under Louis XIV. He inspired subject matter for painted fan leaves, and moreover imposed strict etiquette at court involving the use (and non-use) of fans. Price £10 P&P £2.75 |

In the first exhibition of its kind to be held in the Fan Museum, Pankha (common word for hand fans in urban India) celebrates what is mostly the traditional craft of women at home in the villages and towns of India. Fixed fans, made of bamboo, palm leaf, wood, brass, cloth, plastic, velvet and lace are carefully embroidered with beads, frills, sequins and mirror pieces - to then be used for fanning relatives in the house, to fan fires on roadside snack stalls or to fan images of the god in the temple. Shapes are often traditional to particular regions. The fans featuring in this exhibition come from the collection of the eminent contemporary artist, Jatin Das, which is housed at the J D Centre of Art, Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. Price £4.50 P&P £2.75 |
