The Fan Museum is excited to bring two workshops focusing on the Art of Chinese Ink Painting to it’s Georgian-replica Orangery, hosted and led by Mengya Chen, and part of a wider pilot project run by UNESCO and Nottingham Trent University.

These intimate workshops (morning: 10:00am-12:00 and afternoon: 2:00pm-4:00pm) will take participants through a cultural journey, including a brief introduction to the history of Chinese painting, an introduction the traditional materials used and active demonstration before participants can partake on both Xuan paper (made of bamboo and very important for absorbing the ink in a controlled way) and fan surfaces. All materials are provided, and access to the Museum and the current exhibition Monarchy: An Exhibition of Royal Fans is included!

Spaces are limited, and tickets are free!

This workshop would not be possible without funding from Nottingham Trent University and the collaborative support of UNESCO, who we thank with great appreciation. We further thank all help and support from the Project Lead, ZhisuLondon (ZSLondon) and the following supporting communities: Bonjour Girls, UK Chinese Women Connect, Being, and University of Liverpool Alumni Engagament.

Mengya Chen began painting from an early age under the tutelage of her
master teacher, renowned traditional Chinese painter Wang Xiaogang,
and graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. Through years of
dedicated study, she has excelled in traditional Chinese flower-andbird
painting and obtained the highest level certificate from the China
Academy of Art. Having worked in China as a teaching assistant in
traditional Chinese painting for many consecutive years, she is adept
at tailoring her instruction to individual students and is highly
regarded by learners.

In addition to painting, Mengya has studied the ancient art of the
guqin (Chinese zither) under Zeng Chengwei, a renowned master of
the Shu School, and earned a Level 10 guqin certificate; she has
played in public performances across China and the UK. The
resonance between painting and music enriches her artistic teaching,
emphasising the transmission of artistic conception and the holistic
presentation of Eastern aesthetics, thereby better preserving and
promoting traditional Chinese culture.

In 2007, Mengya came to the UK for further studies and read a
Master’s degree in Art and Design from the University of
Hertfordshire. She now resides in London where she continues to
develop her art under her master teacher. During her time in the UK,
she has organised and participated in large cultural and teaching
events on Chinese painting, engaging with audiences of different of
ages and from diverse cultural backgrounds, to subtly spread the
timeless elegance of Chinese culture.
