The Fan Museum is looking for a willing, personable, and hard-working Museum Assistant to assist with the running of all areas in a small and unique Museum.

Museum Assistant

  • Greenwich, London, on-site working
  • £25,000, full time position (Monday-Friday), with required select weekend work (time off in lieu)
  • Expected start date of mid May 2026, as subject to the duration of the recruitment process

Job Summary:

The Museum Assistant supports the daily operations of The Fan Museum, London’s only Museum dedicated to the celebration, artistry, and history of hand fans. This entry-level role, combines (as required) front-of-house visitor engagement with other Museum work, including practical support for events, collections care, and exhibitions. It is an ideal position for an enthusiastic individual, someone who is wishing to develop a career in the Museum and Heritage sector and work in a cultural setting.

Job Description:

The role of Museum Assistant will cover both operational and curatorial duties, where required. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Visitor Experience & Front of House
  • Welcome all visitors with enthusiasm and provide friendly and informed responses to Museum related queries.
  • Using a till system to assist with ticketing and retail sales.
  1. Exhibition and Curatorial Support (supervised by a Curatorial member of staff)
  • Monitor gallery environments to support the safeguarding of both visitors and objects.
  • Assist with exhibition procedures and undertakings with supervision.
  • Support environmental and pest-control monitoring throughout the Museum.
  • Support with documentation and storage tasks.
  • Follow Museum procedures on handling, conservation, security and object care where required.
  1. Social Media
  • Continue to develop the Museum’s Social Media pages, output and links.
  • Create core content for social media pages and manage posting schedule.
  • Produce a monthly report indicating Social Media growth.
  1. Events, Learning & Community Engagement
  • Support the planning and running of Museum events, public programming, scheduled activities, and educational outreach that broaden access to the Museum’s collections.
  • Support relationships and collaborative projects with local schools, community groups, and cultural partners.

Job Requirements:

Essential Skills:

  • An eye for detail and high levels of accuracy with enthusiasm for culture and the heritage sector.
  • A rigorous, structured, and systematic approach to duties and time-keeping with the ability to prioritise and act efficiently.
  • Well-developed communication skills.
  • Excellent administrative skills.
  • Complete proficiency in written and spoken English.

Desirable Skills:

  • Prior experience of collections care procedures (such as environmental monitoring and pest-control).
  • Working with and development of Social Media, editing posts (pictures and video), and content-creation.
  • Sound knowledge of health and safety requirements.
