Fanning the Senses

Fanning the Senses washes scents of roses, jasmine, violets and many beautiful flowers over us. This exhibition is devoted to the sprays of perfumed flowers that were popular decoration for fans, many of which were impregnated with corresponding perfume: from European fans of the 17th to 20th centuries, to Japanese. The occasions of use and styles of featured fans, and indeed meaning of the flowers depicted, are many and varied. This Spring exhibition followed on from a popular previous exhibition, A Garden of Fans, commemorating the bicentenary of the Royal Horticultural Society.
